The role
The School of Humanities and Educational Studies seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities, with a research specialism and/or teaching experience in any of the areas of this cutting-edge, inherently interdisciplinary subject. We are looking for a dynamic, creative and driven individual who will lead the development of the School’s digital strategy, and work with colleagues from across the School to complement and enrich our existing portfolio, which includes undergraduate courses in Archaeology, Creative and Professional Writing, English Literature, History (with routes in American Studies, and Medieval and Early Modern Studies), Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, and Theology. The successful candidate will be joining a School with a strong track record of submissions to three Units of Assessment (English Language and Literature, History, and Theology and Religious Studies) in the REF, and a lively postgraduate community; s/he will consolidate our thriving research culture – and help expand it into new directions – drawing on her/his own area(s) of excellence and interests.
The successful candidate will be expected to design and deliver undergraduate modules in their area of expertise, as well as support the improvement of our students’ digital literacy skills by contributing, as appropriate, to adapting and enhancing our current provision, which already numbers a range of interdisciplinary, cross-programme options. The School is committed to fostering collaborations within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education, where our areas of expertise include Digital Media, Film Production, Games Design, Journalism, and Applied Linguistics, and across the University, where we have close links with colleagues in the Medical School, and in Human and Life Sciences.
You will play a commensurate role in the further development of our collaborative working culture, in the design and implementation of inclusive curricula, and in the enhancement of the student experience and of our graduates’ employability. To these ends, you will be required to provide pastoral, as well as academic, support to our students, and to contribute to the management of our courses, as required by the relevant Subject Lead or Head of School. You must be able to demonstrate a sense of initiative, creativity and judgment in applying appropriate approaches to the design and delivery of modules, to teaching and learning support, and other scholarly activities.
A Ph.D. in any of the Humanities subjects (or cognate areas), research and/or teaching expertise In Digital Humanities (with a broad understanding of current developments in the field), and previous experience of HE teaching are essential requirements. An HE teaching qualification or fellowship of Advance HE is highly desirable; the potential to achieve fellowship of advance HE within the first 12 months of employment is a requirement of appointment to Senior Lecturer.
Expected start date: January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter
